Meet Quasimodo, A Special German Shepherd With Short Spine Syndrome

Quasimodo isn’t like most dogs.

In fact, he might be like only 13 other dogs on the planet. He has a condition called short spine syndrome.

This special 4-year-old was taken in by Secondhand Hounds, an animal shelter in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Sara Anderson, the large-breed foster coordinator for the shelter, was contacted by a shelter in Kentucky because of her love of special-needs dogs. Then, Quasi was transported over to her by Mobile Mutts Rescue Transport.

And, no, they didn’t name him Quasimodo to make fun of him.

According to the Quasi the Great Facebook page, “His name is in no way shape or form making fun. Sara (Quasi’s coordinator with SHH) and Terri (his advocate in KY) picked the name because Quasimodo was a protagonist. The Quasi of SHH is our hero because he is the definition of the qualities we all admire in our dogs. Born different but never knowing any other way, he seeks to please the people who have shown him kind hands and warm hearts. He may not look like many dogs on the outside, but his heart and soul shine through and make him one of God’s most beautiful creatures.

var OX_ads = OX_ads || []; OX_ads.push({ slot_id: “537251602_56eb9605c4828”, auid: “537251602” });

Although he can’t turn his head, this unusual pup isn’t in any pain.

He had surgery to remove an embedded collar in his neck, and soon his “screw tail” will be fixed as well. SHH is giving him all of the love and attention he needs. Plus, a human geneticist from the University of California is even studying his blood to find out what causes short spine syndrome.

Once he gets a clean bill of health and his temperament is determined, Quasi will find a forever home.

We’re rooting for you buddy!

He may look a little different, but Quasi still has a LOT of love to give!

In an effort to teach the public about Quasi and other special-needs dogs, Secondhand Hounds posted an amazing update about him:

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

Hi everybody! There seem to be lots of questions that keep coming up so I want to be sure that everyone has the answers…

If you’d like to help Secondhand Hounds…

Please visit their donation page.

“Secondhand Hounds currently has almost 200 dogs available for adoption (some with special needs) and there are millions of animals waiting for their chance in shelters and rescues around the world. If you have room in your home and your heart, please consider adopting one of these animals that want nothing more than love, and a second chance.

These people are doing amazing work for countless amazing animals. Hopefully, Quasi will help the shelter raise money so they can give homes to other dogs in need!
